  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 4 medium Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced (about 4 cups)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or cheese blend)
  • ½ cup chopped onions
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (optional for creamy layer)
  • ½ cup milk (for thinning soup if needed)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • Nonstick spray or butter for greasing dish

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium heat with chopped onions and minced garlic. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook until no longer pink, then drain excess fat.
  • Prepare potatoes by slicing them thinly (about 1/8 inch thick) for even cooking.
  • Optional Cream Layer: Mix the cream of mushroom soup with ½ cup milk in a bowl to create a smooth sauce.
  • Layer the casserole in the prepared dish:
    - First layer: sliced potatoes
    - Second layer: cooked beef mixture
    - Third layer: shredded cheese and optional cream sauce
    - Repeat layers until all ingredients are used. Top with extra cheese.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes.
  • Uncover and bake an additional 15–20 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  • Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
